How does a turbidity meter work?

A turbidity meter operates on the principle that suspended particles in a liquid scatter light, allowing for accurate determination of the liquid’s turbidity or cloudiness. The meter uses a light source, often infrared light, that is directed at the sample. As the light passes through the liquid, the suspended particles in the liquid scatter the light at different angles. This scattering is then measured by a detector that is positioned at an angle to the light source, usually at a 90-degree angle.

The amount of light detected by the sensor provides an indication of turbidity: the more particles present in the liquid, the more light is scattered. The turbidity meter converts this information into a reading in Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU), which is the standardized unit for expressing turbidity. This technology makes it possible to quickly and efficiently assess the quality of water, especially in applications such as water purification and environmental monitoring.
